Service as a pathway to peace

Yoga, Service, & Community

Are you curious about living, learning, and serving in a 50 year old intentional spiritual community with roots deeply embedded in the classical system of Ashtanga (eight-limbed) Yoga? Are you feeling called to focus on your own positive transformation while serving alongside growth-minded people whose ultimate aim is peace? Are you curious, energetic, flexible, self-reflective, and want to make the world a better place?

If your response to any of these questions of inquiry is “yes,” then volunteering at Mount Madonna may be the right next step for you!

The volunteer environment

diversity, equity, inclusion & belonging

Consider spending three or even six months living and volunteering in the intentional community at Mount Madonna Center, on a mountain top overlooking Monterey Bay. Come develop interpersonal and practical life skills, while cultivating meaningful connections to last a lifetime! This is an opportunity to explore a lifestyle based on yogic principles – aiming to live a healthy life through quieting the mind, practicing self-awareness, discovering meaning, growing spiritually, and, ultimately, pursuing self-transformation on a path to peace – while serving alongside others dedicated to similar values.

More than a work study program, Mount Madonna’s volunteer program encourages immersion in vital multi-generational community life. You will be invited and supported in practicing daily, developing flexibility and responsiveness in helping others, adapting to new situations, learning positive communication skills, and forming lasting meaningful connections.

The commitment

A Supportive Volunteer Environment

  • Make a commitment to “conscious” healthy living
  • Dedicate yourself to service by being fully present for a 28-hour weekly service schedule
  • Enjoy a “room of your own” (single accommodation/shared bath). Couples welcome!
  • Be nourished by vegetarian meals shared communally (vegan and non-gluten always an option)
  • Participate in regular morning yoga classes, including asana (postures), pranayama (breathing techniques), and meditation
  • Engage in Community, Orientation, and Reflection Experience (CORE), a weekly orientation and reflection circle
  • Experience a rich multi-generational community life through participation in community meetings, activities, events and retreats
  • Invite mentorship of long time senior yoga students of Baba Hari Dass
  • Dedicate personal time to reflect and to create
  • Explore daily rituals and activities at the Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple
  • Avail yourself of our facilities, including the outdoor hot tub and the Kaya Kalpa Wellness Center for bodywork and Ayurvedic consultations
  • Find inspiration among 380 acres of natural redwood beauty and miles of wilderness trails
  • Mount Madonna prioritizes diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging and strives to create a culture that empowers and supports individuals to bring their full and authentic self to the workplace.
