Dance has been used throughout time to connect with life force, evoke higher power, lead back to the self, and invoke deep truth and knowing. For over 50 years, dance pioneer Anna Halprin has been reinvesting contemporary dance with this power. Using improvisation, imagery, language, individual and group interactions, visualizations, music, the outdoor environment, and non-stylized movement, we will access stories that make our lives meaningful, tap into deep sources of bodily wisdom, and dance the renewal, recreation, and healing of ourselves and our world. Participants will create personal dance rituals that grow from direct experience and express heightened creative awareness. Movement techniques to stretch and reanimate the body also will be taught. This process integrates the physical, emotional, and spiritual in a joyous celebration of life. The workshop is open to all - no prior experience necessary.
  • Continuing Education Credit for nurses.
  • Fulfills the spiritual practice prerequisite for John F. Kennedy University's Graduate School for Holistic Studies.

ANNA HALPRIN, founder of the San Francisco Dancers' Workshop and co-founder of the Tamalpa Institute, is a seminal figure in the world of dance and New Theater. She has influenced the principal theater, dance, and growth centers of the world, and, now in her 85th year, continues to teach and perform internationally. She is author of Movement Ritual, Moving Toward Life, Five Decades of Transformational Dance, and Dance as a Healing Art. She has received numerous honors from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Guggenheim Foundation, the American Dance Guild, and many others. In 1997, the American Dance Festival named her a distinguished master teacher, and in 1998 she was awarded for her lifetime achievement as a dancer, the most prestigious award in her field.
